Tower Hamlets Deanery Profile:

Located in the East End of London, Tower Hamlets is home to a diverse and vibrant community. Over half of Tower Hamlets’ population is from non-White British ethnic groups. A third is Bangladeshi, of whom half is under 20 years old. Sixty per cent of the White British population is over 30. The 2001 census revealed that the borough has a population of 196,106 made up of people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds – over one third of the population is Bangladeshi and 7% of the population is from African/Caribbean backgrounds.

The Deanery oversees the Church’s work locally in Tower Hamlets.  It aims to encourage community development (and has just engaging a full-time Development Officer to this end) and grow relationships between parishes themselves as well as within the whole local community.

This work is entirely inclusive and not dependent on faith, culture, background, etc.  The Deanery's work is overseen by the Synod, a committee consisting of both clergy and lay representatives from congregations of each parish. The Synod is empowered by an Act of Parliament to engage with issues of concern in the community and to formulate policies to deal with them.

Tower Hamlets Deanery falls within the Stepney Episcopal area. The Bishop of Stepney has oversight and a supporting role. See the Diocese of London pages for further details by clicking here.

In 2004 the Synod prepared a strategy document to focus activity across the Borough. Please click the link to view the Deanery Strategy Report (pdf document)
