Canary Wharf Retail Chaplaincy Team Require Volunteers
Revd Fiona Stewart-Darling is currently trying to recruit lay (or ordained) people to join a new retail chaplaincy team to work with her offering chaplaincy to staff in the Retail outlets in Canary Wharf.
Fiona is looking for people who are good listeners, enjoy being in a shopping environment, happy to be part of a ecumenical and interfaith team and willing to offer pastoral care and support to all the retail staff. Volunteers would be required to offer 2-3 hours each week, between Monday and Friday.

Terry Waite - Survival in Solitude
Terry Waite was Archbishop Robert Runcie's envoy to the Middle East in the 1980s. He was abducted in the Lebanon after securing the release of several other hostages. He will speak on Survival in Solitude at this event, which will raise money for the Contextual Theology Centre's work in East London.Tickets for the event at St Katharine's on 16th October (at 7.30pm) £10, and for a further £10, and a buffet supper is available at 6.30pm for a further £10. The Early Church History Course
St Paul's, Old Ford are hosting a five week course on Tuesday evenings, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and starts at 7.30pm. (Apologies, missed the first one when this went to press - Dawn)

Ken Leech Reader Project
The Contextual Theology Centre has launched a project to publish an anthology o writings by Revd Kenneth Leech. Until retiring from full time ministry in 2004, Fr Ken spent over 40 years working in London's East End.
The anthology will be in the form of a 'Reader' designed to illustrate how thology can inform prayer and action in a local context.
There is
an appeal for information from David Bunch, who is working with CTC on this project. If you have recollections, resources or any other information which would help the project, he would be very grateful.

Community Grants
Connecting Communities Plus Community Grants are aimed at locally run and managed voluntary and community organisations with an income of less than £50,000 per year, run by volunteers or with one full time or two part time paid staff. The the third and final round of the fund is also supporting local projects that will focus on the legacy of the slave trade following the 200th anniversary of the passage of the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 2007.

Estate Day
Rebecca Turnstall is the author of the Rowntree Foundation Report - 25 Years on 20 Estates - Turning the Tide? Rebecca will be leading this Estate Day, exploring why some estates work while others do not, and how faith groups can improve the quality of life in these environments. The day will be chaired by Bishop Laurie Green, chair of the National Estates Churches Network.

Events at St Paul's Shadwell
St Paul’s Shadwell Alpha Course begins this Wednesday 3rd Oct at 7pm for supper. Anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Christian faith are welcome to attend.
Harvest Family Service - Sunday 7th October at 11am – All welcome. We will also be bringing non-perishable items to the service to donate to Whitechapel Mission as part of our giving.
Coffee & Cake – an opportunity to chat over coffee and cake. Held in the Café Room at St Paul’s Shadwell on Monday 8th October and Monday 4th November 10am to 12 noon. All welcome.
Marriage MOT – The ‘Marriage MOT’ is for every married couple. No matter how long you have been married and whatever the strengths of your relationship are everyone benefits from taking time to review important issues in your marriage. The ‘Marriage MOT’ is often run in conjunction with ‘The Marriage Course’ and is an opportunity to spend time together as a couple looking at how to carry on building a healthy marriage. There is no group work involved. The evening starts with enjoying a special meal together followed by a short talk and then there is plenty of time for discussion as a couple. Being held on Thursday 8th November at 7pm.
Matthew Frost – Chief Executive of Tearfund, an international relief organisation, will be speaking at the 11am service on Sunday 18th November.
Patrick Regan - Founder and Chief Executive of XLP - an urban youth charity, will be speaking at the 11am and 6pm services on Sunday 25th November.
Alpha East London Meeting – Tuesday 27th November at 2pm at St Paul ’s Shadwell. Anyone running or interested in finding out more about running Alpha in Tower Hamlets are invited to join us for this meeting. Please contact the office on the number below if you would like to attend.

Funding for Community Projects Day
Maggie Durran is leading this event, which takes place at London Diocesan House on 7th November. Maggie has written a handbook for managing and developing church buildings for mission and ministry.

Twice Born Ventures presents...
a special benefit performance of Oscar Wilde's story "The Happy Prince" with all donations going to the St John on Bethnal Green Restoration Fund. This one man show is directed by longtime St. John's member, Amanda Maud and performed by James Lucey. Service of Remembrance at St Paul's

Epiphany
Contemporary Iconographers in Britain
For the Christmas period, we will be reconfiguring the space at All Hallows to present a survey exhibition of contemporary icons. Our aim will be to display works by some of the best current practitioners of traditional iconography – all of them working in Britain but not necessarily British-born.
SPECIAL EVENTS: Wallspace plan an evening Colloquium to discuss the issues raised by the growth of interest in the iconographic tradition. They will also continue to use the opportunity of showing in a working church – a place for worship and liturgy – with a celebration of Orthodox Vespers during the exhibition.

Faith Hope and Diversity Training
The Scripture Union have organised some training days to help Christians think through the issues that working amongst people of other faiths raises. It is hoped the training days will give people a chance to think through some of the issues, reflect on what the Bible has to say, ask questions and get practical help.
The London event takes place on Wednesday 7 November from 10.30am - 3.30pm at a cost of £10.

Magic Me
Magic Me
is a professional arts organisation bringing older and younger people in Tower Hamlets together in arts activity.
Pen Friends
Magic Me are recruiting people aged 25 and over interested in joining a creative writing group 1.30-3.30pm on Fridays at Whitechapel Ideas Store starting November 2nd. Participants will work with professional writer Surya Turner on their own creative writing in a friendly and supportive environment, which they will gradually share with elderly people who want to be involved but cant make it to a group. The starting point will be life stories and no writing experience is necessary.
Refreshments and transport if necessary are provided and all expenses like postage/phone calls will be paid. The aim of the project is to bring local people together, supporting the elderly and housebound to also get involved, and create a book/tape/CD of creative writing to distribute in the borough. The Media Group
Now in its second year, the Magic Me’s Media Group meet at the Sundial Centre in Shipton Street from 1.30-3.30pm on Monday afternoons. The group is for younger people from 18 to 30 and older people from 50 upwards, who have come together to learn digital photography skills, host photographic events at local festivals, and document Magic Me projects. They visit projects in the borough with a professional photographer to take photographs. In order to develop their digital photography skills, they are set photographic assignments and the group have shown exhibitions of their work at the Sundial Centre, Stratford Picture House, and recently at York Hall as part of GenerationXperience, UK Older People’s Day. The first session on Monday October 29th is for younger people only.
The Media Group are documenting Magic Me’s Our Generations , a 3 year programme of exciting arts activity and projects for older and younger people, funded by Arts Council England, the Balance Charitable Foundation, London Borough Tower Hamlets and various other trusts. They have also staged public events at Arnold Circus and Paradise Gardens where they have provided a free photographic portraiture service.
